Venom: Let There Be Carnage Review: Is the sequel better?

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

The new Venom movie is out in all cinemas and some might be asking themselves if it is better than the first movie. (@Nicholas Rivera/Pinterest)

In Venom, directed by Andy Serkin, we meet Eddie Brock, who is played by Tom Hardy: a reporter who just lost his job and his relationship. The villains in this movie are Dr. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), a mad scientist, and Riot (also played by Riz) who is an alien-like organism called a symbiote. Eddie, who has also fused into a symbiote, Venom, has an insane fight with the antagonists and ends up beating them.

In the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage (directed by Ruben Fleisher), Eddie has a new job and is now a journalist. It looks like he has improved his life but he gets into an argument with Venom and they are now temporarily separated. Meanwhile, Cletus Casady (Woody Harrelson) escapes prison with the help of his symbiote called Carnage. Cletus was in prison because he is a serial killer in the movie and was convicted to a death sentence. The question is: who is going to win, Eddie and Venom or Cletus and Carnage?

We see a lot of actors from the last movie come back like Michelle Williams, who plays Eddie’s ex-fiancée, but we also meet new characters like Scream (Naomie Harris), who is one of the villains in the movie next to Carnage and Cletus Casady. Most of the story in the movie is written by Tom Hardy, who is also the main protagonist in the movie known as the character of Eddie.

This film can be described as a mix between an action, sci-fi, and comedy movie because even though it is a superhero movie and it is full of action and fictional components, we can also see some comedy elements. As stated by the website IMDb Venom: Let There Be Carnage is rated as a PG-13 movie, mostly because of the violence and action scenes, the strong language and some disturbing material or suggestive references. Even though it might seem that this is a Marvel movie, it is actually produced by Columbia Pictures, Tencent Pictures, Pascal Pictures and Marvel Entertainment; so it is not fully owned by Marvel though they did work on the production. As announced by CNBC, some Sony Movies like the Spiderman and Venom franchises will be granted to Disney+ in the future, but right now in Honduras the movie is only officially released in theaters.

In my opinion, this movie is 4/5 stars because it was hyped to be one of the best movies of 2021, but I just don’t think that it deserves that place despite the fact that it is still a good movie. I believe this because I don’t think that the plot was that good, especially at the beginning. I also believe that this is an effect of the first movie’s plot because I believe that it was better and faster because of the action involved throughout the whole movie. I really like the ending scenes but half of the movie is a bit boring. Even though the movie has a slow start, you should definitely watch it for its incredible production/effects and for its good actors and characters. I think that the best thing about the movie are the antagonists, Carnage, and Cletus, because of their heartbreaking backstory; especially Cletus Casady’s for his horrendous childhood. They go a lot more into detail with the villains in this movie than in the first one, making the audience think more of why they are bad in the first place. I think so far, Carnage is my favorite character in the franchise and is a way better villain than Riot in the last movie. In conclusion, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a good movie overall but I liked the first one more. If you are going to watch it I recommend you watch the first one on Netflix or Amazon Prime to have the best experience.
