The Real Meaning Of Valentine's Day

To some, Valentine’s Day is the time of the year that reminds them that they're single. To others, it is the perfect date to show their lover appreciation. This is the perfect representation of two different perspectives on the same date. What some people need to understand is that Valentine’s Day is the day of love in general, for everyone. It's a good day to show appreciation, affection, and friendship to loved ones and even pets.

As mentioned earlier, Valentine's Day has its own meaning for everyone. I asked some of the students at AST what they thought of Valentine's Day. Some said it was a day to spend with friends, others mentioned that it was all about eating loads of chocolate, and some even said that it’s about celebrating religion. Something that all of these reasons have in common is celebrating with one’s loved ones. No matter who it is you’re celebrating with, Valentine’s Day commemorates love and friendship.

Some people may ask; How do people show appreciation and love during such celebrations? Well, everyone may have their own unique ways and traditions of showing others their affection, but here are some things people usually do on this holiday. People buy roses, boxes of chocolates, conversation hearts, heartfelt notes, giant teddy bears and, surprisingly, many other things. It might seem crazy how a small holiday like Valentine’s Day can be exaggeratedly celebrated, but if you really think about it, that’s a great thing!

Moving on, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated since the beginning of the fifth century. The celebration was originally created by Roman Catholics, to celebrate Saint Valentine. According to History.com, Saint Valentine was known as the saint of happy marriages and engaged couples. Nowadays, many people celebrate Valentine’s Day, across religions and cultures! Here in Honduras, we celebrate it as the Day of Love and Friendship. How sweet!

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful celebration overall. Whether you have a partner or are single, it’s a date anyone can celebrate. Also, the decorations, candy and environment of this festivity are priceless and joyful. The real meaning of Valentine’s Day is love; it’s as simple as that. Which type of love we really want to celebrate is up to each of us individuals.

After all, all we need is love.
